Sheila Hayton

Sheila Hayton

We have heard the sad news today that Sheila Hayton has died. She took ill while on holiday in Spain earlier this year.
She and Jim have been active members of the Club since the early 90’s, she will be missed greatly by all who knew her.
Our thoughts are with Jim and family at this sad time.

Sheila’s funeral service will take place on Wednesday 2nd September at 3.00pm in St Peter’s Church, Harton, then at Sunderland Crematorium.

Sheila had a real talent for writing poetry and in 1998 at one of the regular Burns’ Suppers we used to have at the Club, she was asked to reply to the Toast to the Lassies. Here is her never to be forgotten response.

Tae the Lassies who Play Golf

The men can hit the ba’ for miles,
Ower fences, ower stiles,
Ower wa’s, ower ditches;
Watch that man how he pitches;
Ower the bunker, ower the flag,
Ower the green !
Now aren’t you glad,
That you just hit it doon the middle,
And intae the hole watch it dribble !

 The men can hit the ba’ forever,
Intae the gorse, intae the river,
Intae woods, intae brambles;
Watch that man how he ambles,
Intae water, into trees,
Intae trouble !
Now aren’t you pleased,
That you just hit it doon the middle,
And intae the hole watch it dribble !

  The men can hit the ba’ sae high,
It disappears intae the sky,
Intae the clouds, intae space,
Intae Shields’ market place !
Intae the rubbish, intae the rough,
Intae the gutter !
Now aren’t you chuffed,
That you just hit it doon the middle,
And intae the hole watch it dribble !
